Update from Cr Patterson

For the last eight weeks, Councillors and City executives have been buried in budget discussions. There is nothing more important than respecting our rate payers’ money— delivering for the city now, and for our future. The 2024/25 City Budget was adopted by Council today, 7 June. We have honoured our commitment to keeping net rates and charges increases under inflation.

This is not an exciting budget, and that is intentional. Instead, we have a maintained our strong balance sheet and kept the focus on delivering the absolute essentials for our city. In Southport, the greatest spend will never even be seen— with not at all glamorous, but utterly essential upgrades to ageing underground sewage and storm water pipes.

A summary of key programs from the budget are as follows:

  • $553 million – Water and Sewerage
  • $448 million – City Transport
  • $376 million – Parks, Recreation and Culture
  • $206 million – Waste Management

I am also delighted to bring to your attention the City’s funding for the CBD Masterplan. This funding is in addition to the projects we are already working on for our CBD —the new Woodroffe Park Civic Square, the Nerang Street Mall Place Making, Big City Lights through EGC, the CBD Sundown series and the SEP (Southport Entertainment Precinct). Looking forward to a cracking new financial year. Southport is go!
